Very Fine 1861 Dated Confederate $5 With Sailor and Goddess Images T-37
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great example of the beauty of design in Confederate currency. It is the 1861 dated Confederate States of America $5.00 note. In the center of the note it has the sailor seated beside bales of cotton. On the right hand side it has the image of the Goddesses Ceres & Justice. Ceres was the Roman Goddess of agriculture & grain and of course we all known who Justice was. On the left hand side it has the image of C.C. Memminger who served as the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury and was the key man in production of Confederate paper money. It was issued on September 2nd 1861 from Richmond. This is the version listed as T-37 in Criswell's Confederate Currency book. It is correctly hand signed and numbered in ink. Along the bottom of the note you see the half moon cutout slices in the paper. This is where the note was taken out of circulation. This lets us know it was actually used during the War. The note is in circulated condition and comes in an acid-free holder for preservation and display. This is a very attractive early Confederate note.
