Here is an original Civil War cavalry saber. This is an unmarked version of cavalry officer's saber that is illustrated and described on pages 246 and 247 of the Cavalry & Artillery Saber book by John Thillmann. It has the full-length blade that measures 32-1/4th inches in length. It is completely unmarked so it could be sold by any retailer without advertising for the actual maker. The actual maker was the firm of P.S. Justice of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has the smooth surface of the brass pommel cap and hand guard. Each of the pieces has a beautiful untouched patina with 150 years of age. The handle of the sword has the wooden core intact with the majority of the sharkskin grip remaining. It has the original double twist brass wire encircling the grip. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. The scabbards on these swords are quite distinctive. They utilize a brass throat at the top as well as brass mounts and drag. They are held in place by brass screws. You can tell by the wear on the drag that this sword was heavily used by the cavalryman. This is a very cool sword that you can tell saw service for its country.
