This is a nice looking original CDV image of a Civil War Union sailor. The soldiers and sailors would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp or they made it into town. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. This one shows the seated view of the Union sailor in his dress uniform. He is wearing his frock style military coat and his vest is visible underneath. Sitting on the table beside of him is his naval cap. On the hat insignia you can see the oak sprig composed of three leaves. This lets us know that he held the rank of Paymaster. The back of the card stock has the George Washington tax stamp.
