This is a beautiful original non-excavated cuff size Civil War uniform button for the state of Pennsylvania National Guard. This organization was formed in 1840 from the Spring Garden neighborhood of Philadelphia. During the Civil War they were part of the troops sent to put down the Baltimore riots. They came back to Philadelphia and were designated the 90th Pennsylvania. They saw 28 battles and suffered more than a thousand casualties. The button itself has the large "NG" letters on the front with superb detail. Around the edge of the button it has the Latin inscription "NON SIBI SED PATRIAE" which translates to "Not for himself but for his country." The face of the button has beautiful gold gilt intact and has a fine look. The back and shank are intact with the correct Extra Quality backmark. This is the version listed as figure PA38av in Albert's button book. Tice lists this version as PA220. This is a great looking non-excavated Civil War era Pennsylvania state National Guard button.
