Civil War Philadelphia City Police Coat Button by Steele & Johnson
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautifully designed button. This is the coat size button for the slightly pre-Civil War City of Philadelphia police. It has the beautiful full coat of arms of Philadelphia on the face and down along the bottom edge it reads "POLICE". The original back and shank are intact and it has the correct generic Civil War era backmark of "EXTRA QUALITY". This is a variation of the style listed as PAP271 in Tice's button book. This button would have been made by the firm of Steele & Johnson. This is a superb non-dug original Civil War Philadelphia City Police button.
