Superb C.S. Used Western Military Institute Cadet Cuff Button SU429av
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a button that is tough to get. It is the cuff size uniform button from the Western military Institute. The school was founded in 1847 and located in Drennon Springs, Kentucky. In 1855 the military part of the school merged with the Nashville Military College. Most of the excavated examples come from Confederate sites as did this one. It was found by Robert McDaniel in the camp of the 6th Kentucky Infantry camp in Holly Springs, Mississippi. There is a gorgeous amount of the original gold gilding on the face from the factory. The face of the buttons shows the eagle perched on a cannon surrounded by flags on a lined field. It has the "CADET" at the top with the "W.M.I." at the bottom. The original back present as well and you can read the Scovill maker mark. It has the shank nicely intact on the reverse. This is the style listed as figure SU431av in Albert's button book and KYS295as1 in Tice's button book. The button has excellent detail as you can see. This is a beautiful example of a tough to find button.
