Military Pass for Alexander Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coastal Survery

Here is an original military pass given to an important man in the history of Washington, D.C. This is a hand written military pass that was given to Alexander Dallas Bache. Bache was the Superintendent of the U.S. Coastal Survey and one of the original founders of the Smithsonian Institution. The document was written on April 29th 1861 for Bache to pass through the lines because he "... has business in the Capitol.". It is signed by J.M. Macomb and notes that he was acting for Major McDowell who was commanding at the Capitol. The document measures 8 inches by 5 inches in size.
