Civil War Militia Staff Officer's Pattern Dress Cartridge Box
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautifully designed cartridge box of the Civil War era. This is a less fancy variation of the pattern that is illustrated as plate 796 on page 473 of the buckle and plate book by O'Donnell and Campbell. They state that this pattern was used from 1855 for staff officers and very well-to-do militia units. There are multiple images of officer's wearing these boxes as well as several steel engravings from Civil War newspapers showing them in service. The box itself is constructed from tarred leather with brass hardware. The outer flap has the brass edge with no ornament in the center. This one has the closure tab intact and it has the brass finial is still present and accounted for. The shoulder sling baldric (missing) would have attached to the box on the side via brass loops. This is a fine looking cartridge box that displays well.
