Artillery
S&J Applied Eagle & Shield Design 1870's Artillery Eagle Coat Button AY84
Click on an image to enlarge
This one might be postwar but it's cool enough that every collectors should have one in their collection. This is the coat size version of the style listed as AY84 in Albert's button book. What makes these so much more special than the rest is that the Eagle and shield are made separately and then riveted onto the button face. It's the classic design of the union Eagle with the arrows in one Talon and the branch of peace in the other. The shield has the "A" which denotes the artillery branch of service. On the back of the button it has the maker's Mark of the London, England firm of S&J. This one is in exceptional condition and displays beautifully.
