This is a beautiful original neck gorget from a Belgian officer. These gorgets were decorative ornaments that were worn around the neck of military officers as a sign of status. This is the model of 1845 that was made of nickle with a gilt brass detail that gives it a beautiful tone. It has the insignia applied to the center of the front. It is the insignia that helps us date the piece. The insignia is that of the Belgian King Leopold I, which has the lion with a shield emblazoned with the script style "L". This would date the piece from 1831 until 1865. It measures 6-5/8ths inches by 3-1/2 inches in overall size. It has the remnants of the maker's marking still partially visible on the center of the reverse. This is a piece that any military collector would appreciate.
