Beautiful Hat Plate From The Albany (New York) Burgesses Corps

This is one of the most beautiful hat plates of the Civil War era. This is the pattern that is illustrated as figure 675, on page 297 of the insignia book by Mike O'Donnell and Duncan Campbell. It is the stamped brass hat plate from a uniform hat of the Albany (New York) Burgesses Corps. They list this hat plate as being produced from approximately 1851 until 1861. The Burgesses Corps was organized on October 8, 1833, and that is noted at the bottom of the plate. In the center it has the band across the center of the plate with the letters "ABC". Above the banner. It has the coat of arms for the city of Albany as well as their motto "ASSIDUITY" which translates as "Diligence". The city seal shows the farmer and the Native American sitting with a beaver between and a small sailboat on the Hudson River. At the top of the plate it has the Knights armor. The piece is produced from a single sheet of stamped brass that is gold gilded and this one still retains a superb amount of the original gilding. On the reverse, the plate still retains 2 of the original attachment prongs. The plate measures 4 7/8 inches tall and is 4 inches across at the widest point.
