Original Civil War Era Carte-de-Visite Images of Union Officers & Enlistedmen
CDV Image of Joseph K. Wheeler of the Pennsylvania Independent Light Artillery
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice looking original CDV image of a Civil War Union soldier. The soldiers would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. This one shows the seated view of the union soldier with his arm on the table. He wears the sample 5 button style "sack" pattern military uniform. In his hand he has cradled his hat with the crossed cannon insignia on the front which would denote the artillery branch of service. It has the pencil inscription of the soldier's name "Joseph K. Wheeler." On the back of the card it has the photographer Mark of the Philadelphia firm of O. H. Willard. When you look up the history of Joseph K Wheeler, you find that he served 2 separate times with the Pennsylvania Independent Like Artillery. This was a home defense unit that was called up for emergency situations. The 2nd term of his service the unit was drawn together because of Confederate General Robert E Lee moving into Pennsylvania. The image is vividly clear and displays superbly. A brief history of Wheeler's service and that of the Pennsylvania Independent Artillery will accompany the image.
