This is an authentic CDV image of Union General Erasmus Darwin Keyes (1810-1895). General Keyes was born in Brimfield, Massachusetts on May 29, 1810. He graduated from West Point Military Academy with the class of 1832 and later served as an instructor at the Academy. In May 1861 he served as Col. of the 11th US infantry. In August of that year he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. The General is known during the Gettysburg campaign because he failed to stop Confederate reinforcements from helping General Lee's army. He resigned from military service in May 1864. He died on October 14, 1895 and is buried at West Point Military Academy. It is a nice clear CDV of the General in his dress uniform. The CDV images were made by applying a thin paper photo image of the famous person of the day to a heavier paper card. This made the image more durable and easier to display and also added uniformity to the size. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. On the reverse of the card it has the New York photographer Mark of D. Appleton and Company. It is a fine original CDV that will make a solid addition to any Civil War collection.
