Superb Richmond Made C.S. Short Artillery Sword in the Original Scabbard
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a spectacular piece of Confederate artillery history! It is an original Confederate made short artillery sword in the original scabbard. This is the pattern that was made by the famous firm of Boyle, Gamble and MacFee of Richmond, Virginia. Although it is unmarked it is easily distinguished by the flat sides of the cross guard. The blade is 18.75 inches in overall length with the single fuller on each side. There is a similar sword photographed on page #7 of our friend Shannon Pritchard's book Collecting the Confederacy. The blade of this sword is in superb shape with a beautiful brighter tone all over. The cast brass handle has a gorgeous honey tone to the patina. On the side of the cast brass handle it has the initials "PFK" scratched into the metal. What is so special about this sword is that it is accompanied by the original scabbard. Since the scabbards are made of brass and leather there are only a very small amount of the scabbards survive. This one is in very nice shape as you can see. It has the hand forged throat and drag. The drag is affixed using copper pins and the throat is held in place by iron pins. There is still some of the original painted finish hanging onto the leather. The leather is still solid and displays superbly. You can see where the leather has shrunken slightly over the years which is why the sword doesn't seat all the way down in the scabbard. This could be fixed but I love that it has never been touched and that is why I left it alone. This is an opportunity to own a superb and untouched piece of Confederate artillery history!
