This is a beautiful weapon! It would date from the mid to early 1700's. The gun measures 52 inches in overall length with the massive barrel making up 36-1/2 of those inches. It is smoothbore and fires a massive bullet of .82 caliber. The barrel is superbly made and goes from round to octagonal and back to round. You can see the Damascus pattern over most of the barrel. At the muzzle of the barrel it has the cannon style shape with the silver inlay. Towards the breech of the barrel it has the ornate and intricate detail work with the silver and gold inlay. One of the inlays is a gold one that is likely a maker marking. The gun is complete unmarked except for this proof mark but it is almost surely Germanic in manufacture. The stock is made of a single piece of massive beautiful wood that has a stunning look to the grain. It is relief carved with beautiful lines. On the front side of the stock it has the original sliding piece of wood that is held in place by an iron spring. The design utilizes brass for the buttplate, triggerguard and ramrod channel guides. The triggerguard and buttplate have the face mask designs. On the plate on the side opposite of the lockplate it is designed like a sea serpent made of brass. The gun has the polished horn material for the nose cap. The mechanics of the gun are still in the original flintlock configuration. The action works crisply on all positions. This gun is exceptional in all regards and is nice enough for any collection or museum.
