This is a scarce original Confederate mounted artillery saber in scabbard. You encounter the short pattern Confederate artillery swords with regularity but the mounted versions are extremely scarce. There are few of these swords remaining and this one is a nice one. It is believed by many that this version was produced in North Carolina by the famed Confederate arms maker, Lewis Froelich in Kenansville, North Carolina. His operation was known as the Confederate States Armory. The blade of the sword is full-length at 32 inches and you can see the distinctive wines and waves it was hand forged. The brass of the hand guard and pommel have a pleasing untouched color all over. If you notice the underside of the guard is created like the type I US artillery saber. They have the recessed area so that the scabbard could be produced without using a throat. On the handle of the sword it has the original wooden core intact as well as 90% of the oilcloth wrapping and the entire single-strand iron wire going over the top. The sword is accompanied by a the original iron and brass scabbard. The scabbard is complete since it is the pattern that was created without having a throat at the top. the scabbard has both of the massive brass mounts intact as well as both of the rings and the original iron drag. These swords left the arsenal with the brown lacquer paint on the scabbard. When you are lucky enough to find one with the scabbard this paint is almost always missing. As you can see this one has a trace amount of the original brown lacquer paint in the nooks and crannies. Don't miss this scarce original Confederate mounted artillery saber.
