This is an original Civil War dated autograph of Civil War General and future President James Abram Garfield (1831 -1881). This one page letter measures 7-1/2 inches by 9-1/4th inches in overall size. It was written from Painesville, Ohio and is dated August 31st 1861. The paper is a letter of introduction for Edward E. Johnson and it is signed by seventeen witnesses who vouch for his character. Garfield has written and signed an endorsement at the bottom margin that reads, "I am acquainted with most of the signers of the above commendation and know them to be worthy and reliable men." Garfield served as a colonel in the 42nd Ohio Infantry in August 1861, and he aided with the recruitment process. He served under General Buell and fought numerous battles in Kentucky before he was promoted to brigadier general at the age of 30. After the war, Garfield began his Congressional career and went on to become the 20th president of the United States, only to be assassinated six months into his first term. The letter has been mounted onto a larger sheet of paper long ago. The document is accompanied by a modern made xerox copy of Garfield in uniform. The Garfield signature is nice and clear and is a wonderful piece of history!
