This is a fantastic piece! It is an original Confederate cannon shell for the rifled Confederate Brooke pattern cannon. This is the 20# version which means it is 3.67 inches in diameter. It is a nice large projectile that stands almost 13 inches tall. These shells have always been one of my favorite patterns because of the way that the sabot attaches. They took a bolt and bolted the sabot in place to try to keep in intact. On this one it worked because we have half of the copper sabot as well as the bolt on the bottom. The iron on this one has been cleaned and displays well as you can see. The copper sabot has a thick dark tone all over. At the top of the shell, the fuse hole has the read pattern fuse holder. This is one of the ones that were fired by the Confederate in Petersburg, Virginia. This is a fantastic piece of Confederate iron!
