Here is a very pretty sword! This is the sword officially referred to as the U.S. model 1860 staff & field officer’s sword. This name is a little misleading since almost all of the swords of this pattern were made in the late 1800’s. This one was probably made about 1880 or so. It has the very nicely etched blade that is full-length. At the base of the blade it has the retailer mark of the famous firm of Jacob Reed & Sons of Philadelphia. We can rest assured that this one was made after the Civil War since they weren’t even in business during the War.
This high grade presentation sword features a full-length 31-3/8th inch double edged diamond section steel blade with 18" etched and gilt washed panels of decoration. The right side etched " To Captain Evan G. Boyd from the Enlisted Men of Company G 1st Delaware U.S.V. Infantry" surrounded by scrolls. The opposite side with a large Old English "U.S.", arms motifs and scrolls. The ricasso with an etched panel "JACOB REED'S / SONS / PHILA / PA". The gilded cast brass hilt features a fixed guard on the right side showing an American eagle with three flags on each side; the opposite side has a folding counterguard with a patriotic shield surrounded by arms. The pommel has an eagle on the right side in high relief. The silver grip has each section chiseled with decoration and divided by a strip of decorated brass. The sword is accompanied by the original nickel plated scabbard with pierced gilt brass mounts featuring an eagle on the throat mount and arms motifs on the second mount. This is a great looking sword from the 1st Delaware Infantry.
