WOW! This is a beautiful piece of history! This is an original Civil War cavalry officer's saber in scabbard. This sword was sold by one of the premier retailers in American during the Civil War, the Horstmann & Sons firm of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. They operated a custom shop so they could assemble a sword in any configuration that you desired. This one is beautifully designed with lots of special details. The blade of the sword is full-length at 34 inches. Each side of the blade as well as the spine of the sword has the original gold wash. It makes the wonderful detail on the blade stand out superbly. The front side of the blade has the eagle design with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" National motto that means "Of One, Many". It also has the small "US" lettering with a beautiful script style. At the base of the blade it has the retailer's marking of the Horstmann & Sons name. On the back of the blade it has the patriotic and floral design with the script "US" in the center. The blade was made by the firm of Gebruder of Weyersburg. It has the king's head stamp at the base. They made blade for high quality retailers such as Horstmann. The hand guard and pommel cap of the sword have the gold gilding to the brass. each piece has the floral design that lets us know it was for an officer and not an enlisted man. The grip of the sword is the very high version that is made of a polished piece of high quality horn. It has the original double twisted brass wire wrapping. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is just as fine quality as the sword itself. The steel scabbard has the brass mounts, throat and drag. The mounts of the scabbard are of very fine quality cast brass with gold gilding. The middle mount has the likeness of a cavalryman on horseback with his saber flying in the air in a charge. The lower portion of the sword has the brass likeness of a Devil's head design. This is an exceptional sword from all angles.
