This is a gorgeous piece! It is an original hat plate for the state of New Hampshire from the Mexican War time frame. This is the exact style that is illustrated at the top of page 293 in the headgear insignia book of O'Donnell and Campbell. He lists them as being from 1840 until about 1845 in manufacture but they would have been used on afterwards as well. The plate itself measures 4 inches by 3-3/4ths inches in overall size. It is made of stamped brass and it still retains a superb amount of the original gold gilding to the face. It has the Union eagle at the top with the ship under construction design below. It has the draped flags on each side with the drum, backpack below along with the cannon, mortar and cannonball stack. On the reverse of the plate it still has both of the origianl brass attachment wires remaining. This is a wonderful and scarce piece from all angles.
