This is a tough to find version of Civil War rifle. This is a very attractive original classic Civil War .58 caliber Model 1861 military rifle. It has the vividly clear 1813 production date on the lockplate along with the "BRIDESBURG” maker mark and Union eagle on the lockplate. What makes this one special is it is one of the early production guns that have the date below the Bridesburg marking and the eagle is placed between the nipple bolster and middle of the hammer. Flayderman states that this marking is "...scarcer and work a slight premium." This Bridesburg mark is the mark that was used by the Alfred Jenks Company of Bridesburg, Pennsylvania. According to Flayderman's guide they made 98,464 of these guns from 1861 to 1865. The action works crisply on all positions. The barrel is full-length and has the Government inspector initials still present at the breech. It has the original front sight intact. The rear sight is original and complete. Inside of the barrel, it has the nice original factory rifling still visible. The stock has an attractive look with a medium attic tone all over with very light bumps and bruises you expect of a gun that was in service during the war. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate you can still see the rectangular cartouche stamps where the gun was approved for military service by the Government inspector. The stock displays beautifully with a few spots that have been filled in to enhance its display. All of the barrel bands are present as well as both of the sling swivels and the excellent original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel. This is a fine looking original Civil War .58 caliber military rifle from the Alfred Jenks Company with the scarce early production markings.
