This is a wonderful artifact! It is an original Confederate soldier’s canteen. This is the style that is made of wood and referred to by collectors as the "Wood Drum” canteen. This one is finely crafted as you can see. It measures 7-1/4th inches across and is 2-1/2 inches thick. It is the version that is held together by iron band that have a gorgeous untouched look all the way around. This one has all three of the original brass strap loops intact. The wooden spout is still intact which is rare on these wooden canteens. They are usually missing because the wood dries out from not being used and then it falls out. What makes this one special is that it is the one that was used for the cover photograph on the Millennium edition of the North South Trader Magazine's price guide. It isn't often that you see such a pretty Confederate canteen.
