Here is a gorgeous 205 year old gun. This is one of the .69 caliber military muskets that was manufactured under the 1808 contract. In preparation for the expected war with England Congress approved 19 gunmakers to make a total of 85,200 muskets. There were only about half of these that were delivered. This is one of the guns that was manufactured by the firm owned by Steven Jenks and Sons of Providence, Rhode Island. They had a total contract to make 4000 muskets and it is believed that 3925 of that contract were delivered. Behind the hammer on the lock plate of the gun has the 1812 production date as well as "JENKS'S, RI". In front of the hammer it has the clear "US" stamping and traces of the Union Eagle. When this gun left the factory it was in the flintlock configuration. This one was converted to percussion late on so it could be used. It was converted to percussion using the drum style conversion. The mechanics of the lock plate work crisply on all positions. The barrel of the gun is full-length at 44 3/4 inches. At the breech of the barrel you can still see the "P" proof mark. The stock of the gun has a gorgeous ancient dark tone to the single piece of high quality Walnut wood. The corners of the wood are still crisp and it displays superbly from all angles. The metal of the gun is smooth with a beautiful look. Underneath the gun it has both of the original sling swivels intact and they still pivot. In the channel underneath the barrel, it has the original ramrod intact. This gun has a wonderful look all over especially when you consider this gun is 205 years old. You won't have to worry about upgrading this one.
