What a cool looking gun! This is an original Spanish flintlock pistol. This pattern is referred to by collectors as a "Spanish Miquelet" flintlock. This gun fires a bullet of approximately .70 caliber. It has the original full-length 8 1/2-inch part round part octagonal barrel. The breech of the barrel is marked B? / A? along with multiple proofmarks. When you look closely at the lockplate you see that it is marked with what appears to be "QUEIRO". The action of the lock still has very strong spring but it no longer catches on the positions. It is sporting a finely crafted walnut stock with engraved floral design near rear tang of the barrel. It has the original iron triggerguard and belt hook. The carved grip base pommel cap is relief carved engraved and decorated with a flower design in the wood. The ornate Miquelet style lock has detailed chiseled work throughout including frizzen, main spring and hammer ring. The gun has an overall size of 15 inches. Records show that Quero, Mathias is listed as being a gunmaker in Malaga, Spain C. 1732 according to pages 96 and 100 in Spanish Guns and Pistols by W. Keith Neal. Although the lock appears to have an extra "I", we believe this gun to be by Quero. This is a very attractive early production flintlock pistol.
