What a great buckle! This is the South Carolina waist belt plate of the pattern that is photographed for plate 391 on page 213 of the expanded edition of Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates by Steve Mullinax. The face of the plate is made of stamped brass with the "SC" lettering for the State of South Carolina. The face of this plate has a gorgeous brown patina with tan dirt hanging on in the protected areas. You can just imagine the soldier from the Palmetto state wearing this plate. On the reverse of the plate you see the double set of brass belt attachment hooks still remaining. The South Carolina militia use this pattern before the outbreak of the Civil War with most of them being lost or discarded early in the war. As you can see the lead on the back of this plate is in fine condition. It also has the old label that states it was excavated in 1957 and the "FR" which is probably Fredericksburg, Virginia. This buckle came from the award winning collection of Don Phillips. His Confederate Belt Buckle display won numerous awards at the biggest Civil War shows across the country. This is your chance to own a buckle from his "Best of Show" award winning collection. This is a wonderful piece of Palmetto state history!
