This is a fantastic set! It is an original cased set of high grade Medical Staff officer’s epaulets. These are as fancy as you will find and at one time would have adorned the dress uniform of a high ranking Civil War surgeon. They have a gorgeous golden tone all over. The gold washed brass body of the epaulet is edged with golden bullion fringe. The center of the epaulet has the applied insignia with the silver "MS” center that stand for the Medical Staff department. The "MS” in the center is surrounded by the leaf pattern. Each board has the naval style eagle buttons that affix the epaulet onto the shoulder of the uniform. This is the high grade pattern that is custom designed to fit the right and left side individually and are not interchangeable like the lesser grade of epaulets. The epaulets come encased in the original japanned tin carrying case. The case still retains about 30% of the original black paint. The handle is on the top and the closure tab is present as well. This is scarce and exquisite piece of Civil War and medical history.
