This is a tough to find Civil War Sharps & Hankins patent Navy rifle. This model 1861 navy rifle is one of the most distinctive weapons of the Civil War. They stand out because they have a loading action is also unique to this pattern of gun. When you drop the triggerguard the entire barrel moves forward so the single cartridge can be inserted. The frame has the "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA” makers mark as well as the "SHARPS PATENT 1859” on the back side of the frame. It has the all matching serial numbers of 249. According to Flayderman’s guide there were only 700 of these navy rifles made with the serial numbers being intermingled with the model 1862 carbines. They also can be distinguished from the naval Sharps and Hankins carbines because of the 32-3/4ths inch blued barrel where the standard leather covered barrel navy has the 24 inch barrel. The navy model also has the saber bayonet lug on the underside of the barrel. When you drop the block down on these guns you can still see some of the original factory case coloration. The stock has a good overall look to the original walnut wood. On the underside of the stock it has the original sling swivel still intact. The sights is intact on both the front and breech of the barrel. The action of the gun clicks into position nicely. The hammer of the gun is designed with the striking pin in the center of the hammer. It also has the original sliding safety on the left side beside the hammer. The barrel still has the original lands and grooves of the rifling still visible. This is a very cool Civil War Sharps & Hankins navy model rifle that you don’t often see offered for sale.
