This is a wonderful original uniform worn slightly before the Civil War by Benjamin C. Frost that we just acquired out of a prominent Maine collection. Benjamin Frost was from, Bangor, Maine. Before the Civil War, he served as a apothecary Sergeant and this would've been when he wore this coat. The records show that on August 21, 1862, he enlisted as a hospital steward in the 18th Maine Infantry. It also shows that he was transferred on December 19, 1862 into the field and staff of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery , where he served until he was mustered out on September 1, 1866. During that time he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. The coat itself is a beautifully designed militia style coat that is referred to as collectors as being a "Coatee". This pattern of coat was very popular with the militia units in New England before the Civil War. The coat is constructed of a beautiful red wool material. The material has some small moth nips here and there and to holes that have been repaired on the right-hand chest. Going down the front of the coat it has the 2 rows of 9 staff officer uniform buttons. These buttons have the correct prewar Horstmann of Philadelphia manufacturer markings on the reverse. On each of the cuffs. It has the applied gold ornamentation with 4 buttons on each cuff. All of the buttons are still intact and in fine condition. The collar of the coat has the tall design and still retains each of the 4 cuff size uniform buttons as well. All 10 of the original buttons are intact on the reverse of the coat as well. On the tails of the coat it is designed with the star insignia and both of them are still intact as well. When you open the coat up, you are greeted by the original chest and sleeve linings that are each in beautiful condition, especially when you consider the coat is over 150 years old. At the base of the back lining. It has the "B.C.F." initials that stand for Benjamin C. Frost. If you have wanted an original pre-Civil War uniform with an honest identification without spending $20,000, then this one is for you.
