This is an authentic excavated Confederate uniform button for Infantry branch of service. This is the style button listed as figure CS177 in Albert's button book and CSI215 in Tice's button book. The face of the button has the beautiful Old English style "I" that denotes the infantry branch of service. This is the brass back version of the script style infantry. This button has the maker's mark of the Isaacs firm is only faintly visible on the back of the button. They would have manufactured this button for importation to the South through the naval blockade. The shank is intact on the back. This one has been very lightly pushed on the front but still displays well as you can see. The verbal history is that this button was found in the area of Appomattox, Virginia where Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant. This is a nice and original dug C.S. script style infantry button.
