Indian War Soldier's Haversack Made by the Waterviliet Arsenal

Here is a great display piece from the Indian War era timeframe. This is a canvas haversack that has the stenciled "US" on the outer flap. These were put into production at Watervliet Arsenal and Rock Island Arsenal in 1876. This one was probably manufactured in 1876-78. However Watervliet and RIA continued to manufacture this item for issue to the militia (National Guard) into the 1880s. Watervliet Arsenal was converted to a gun factory in 1891 and manufactured no more of this type equipment after 1890. The outer flap measures about 12-1/2 inches by 16 inches. When you open the flap you see the remnants of the maker's marking of the famous Waterviliet Arsenal in New York. This is a very fine display piece!
