"Firm as Oak in My Own Defense" Marked Manhattan Cutlery Sideknife
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a nice looking size side. The knife measures 10 inches in overall length with the blade making up 5-3/4ths of those inches. The blade is made with the double spear point style edges. What makes this knife interesting is that when you look closely at the blade you see an etched motto. It reads "Firm as Oak in My Own Defense". You can read it all but you have to look closely. The base of the blade has the mark of the Manhattan Cutlery Company of Sheffield, England. I found some reference material that states this knife, would've been made after the Civil War. The company was owned by John Newton and would have been made after 1870. The original handle is intact and is made of staghorn. It has the German silver cross guard. The knife is accompanied by the original sheath. The sheath is made with the red Moroccan leather body and the German silver top mount and drag. The botton is loose on the top mount but is still present. This is a nice looking 1800s knife that has the cool motto wording.
