Rock Island Marked Snap Style Sling Canteen with "US" Marking
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a nice looking original canteen from the late 1800's. This is the style that was widely used during the Indian Wars and even through the Spanish-American War and later. They look almost identical to the Civil War model 1858 canteen except they have the triangles added to the sides for the shoulder strap instead of the loops for the cotton sling. This one has both of the original triangles intact as well as the full-length sling made of canvas. These are tougher to find than the usual ones that have the full shoulder sling. These short straps were to be snapped onto the saddle rather than using the long shoulder slings. On the back side of the sling canvas you can clearly see the Rock Island Arsenal marking and the 1904 production date on the sling. On the canteen itself it has the the original cover intact and you can still see the "US" lettering on the side. It also has had the marking of the 7th U.S. Cavalry added but this marking IS NOT OLD. You are buying the canteen and this is an add-on. At the top of the canteen it has the original stopper remaining as well as the original chain. This is a great looking display piece for the price.
