Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful autographed piece! It is a superb image of one f the Civil War's most famous Union Generals, Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888). The image shows the General seated from the knee up. He wears his dress double breasted frock coat with his General's stars visible on the shoudlerboards. Sheridan graduated West point in 1853 and served for eight years before the Civil War broke out. His first position during the war was as Chief Quartermaster of the Army of Southwest Missouri. In May of 1862 he was promoted to Colonel of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry. Sheridan made Brigadier General on September 13th 1862. He fought at numerous important battles including Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. He then went to aid Grant in Virginia and then made his Shenandoah Valley campaign. After his valiant victory at Winchester he was made a full Major General on November 14th 1864. What makes this one special is that along the bottom of the card it is signed in ink with rank "Phil Sheridan / Maj. Genl.". The autograph is superb and you couldn't hope for a better one. The CDV images were made by applying a thin paper photo image of the famous person of the day to a heavier paper card. This made the image more durable and easier to display and also added uniformity to the size. On the back it has the desirable marking of the Alexander Gardner Studio in Washington, D.C. with the image of the Capitol building. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. The card and autograph have been authenticated by the PSA Company and it comes in one of their holders for display and preservation. This is a great looking image of one of the North's most important generals with his autograph.
