Civil War $50 Missouri "Defense Bond" Currency With Slave Picking Cotton Scene
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a scarce Civil War $50 from the State of Missouri. Across the top of the note it proudly proclaims "MISSOURI DEFENSE FUND" as well as "THE STATE OF MISSOURI". This one is in unissued condition. It was never signed and numbered but they didn't make these after the Civil War so we know it was Civil War production. In the upper right hand corner of the note it has the famous currency image of the Slave carrying the basket of cotton with the other slaves picking in the field behind him. In the center of the note it has the large red ink protector "50" printed onto the paper. This was to help in the prevention of counterfeiting of the note. In the lower right hand corner it has the great seal of the state of Missouri. In the lower right hand corner it has the portrait of the Goddess Ceres seated. On the reverse of the note it has ornate green ink printing. In the center of the reverse it states "Missouri Defense Bonds are secured by a pledge of all the STATE REVENUES and receivable in payment of all Taxes and DEBTS DUE THE STATE". It also has the "50" denominations flaking the writing on each side. This is a very desirable note that is in uncirculated condition and it displays superbly. The overall size of the mote measures 7-1/4th inches by 3-1/4th inches. These were printed by Keating & Ball of Columbia, South Carolina for the secessionist Missouri state government, this $50 requisition for Defense Bonds was part of a plan to pay, in some fashion, members of the Missouri State Guard. Only unissued remainders are known, suggesting that they were never used by the government of Missouri. It comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
