Richmond, Virgnia Excavated Authentic Civil War 12# Borman Pattern Cannonball
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice authentic dug 12# version of the Civil War cannonball. This 12#er ball would have been fired from the smoothbore 4.62 inch cannon. It is the pattern known to collectors as the Borman cannonball because he is the man that held the patent on the fuse. This one still has some of the original fuse intact at the top of the ball. These 12 pound projectiles were a mainstay of the artillery on both sides in the early days of the Civil War. They were later phased out because of the limited range of fire that the smoothbore cannon held against the more modern rifled cannon. It has been flushed out and disarmed for display and preservation purposes as have all of our artillery projectiles. The paint on the side of this one is that it was found at the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virgnia. This one is a nice original 12# Borman cannonball that will be a solid addition to your collection.
