This is a wonderful looking piece! It is an original Civil War cavalry officer's saber and scabbard. This is one of the gorgeous pieces that were produced in Newark, New Jersey by the firm of Henry, Sauerbier. Although it is unmarked it has the distinctive traits. The first of which is is the base of the sword with the unstopped fuller design. The blade is full-length at 35 inches. It has the detailed etching on each side. The blade has a gray tone but when you look closely you can see all of the etching. On the front of the blade it has the image of the soldiers marching into battle. The back of the blade has the "US" as well as the spread wing Union eagle. The handguard and pommel cap are made of brass with the original gold gilding in the protected areas . Each of those pieces have the floral patterns to let us know it was designed for an officer and not an enlistedman. The second trait of Sauerbier is that the pommel is held onto the blade by the screw cap similar to the ones that show up on the 1833 Dragoon sabers. On the grip itself it has the original core intact with the sharkskin covering intact. It has the braided brass wire wrapping intact and it is flanked by the single strands of brass wire. What really makes this sword stand out from the crown is the scabbard. It is constructed entirely out of brass. It is complete with the brass mounts and rings as well as the throat and drag. The mounts, drag and rings are each accented with extra engraving a chase work. The front side has the floral and geometric designs. Between the mounts it has the large American Eagle with the "UNION" banner coming from her beak. This sword is exceptional from all regards and is a stand out keeper!
