This is a wonderful high quality officer's sword from the Civil War timeframe. This beautifully designed sword is from the premiere American edged weapons maker of the 1800's, the Ames Manufacturing Company. It has the full-length 31-1/4th inch fullered blade. The blade has a nice light gray tone with a superb amount of the etching still visible on both sides. At the base of the back side of the blade it has the scripted lettering at the hilt reading "Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee". They utilized this marking from 1848 throughout the Civil War. Because of the langets from the hand crossguard, you can only see traces of the maker marking. The width and form of the blade are correct for being pre-Civil War in production. The front of the blade has the floral and patriotic designs that include the Union eagle as well as the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in the banner. On the back of the blade it has similar design but include a crossed flag design with the Liberty Cap in the center. The handle of the sword really makes this one stand out. It has the massive brass patriotic spread wing eagle and shield making up the crossguard. It has the matching eagle image on each side of the crossguard. The head of the eagle physically comes out from the body and turns to the side. This would not have been an easy piece to make and it shows the quality of the construction. The handle of the sword has the design that the ribbed polished bone that has a gorgeous milky tan color all over. The top of the sword is joined together using a knight's head pommel cap. The sword is accompanied by the original brass scabbard with the ornately carved foliage patterns on one side of the scabbard. The scabbard has all three of the rings intact as well as the stud on the top mount in case the soldier wanted to use the sword with a shoulder belt rig. On the bottom of the scabbard it has the original brass drag. The throat of the scabbard is still nicely intact at the top of the scabbard. This is a stunning piece from all angles.
