MASSIVE BLADE! Here is a fantastic very large sword from the War of 1812 timeframe. This is the pattern that is referred to by collectors as being the "Bird Pommel". Many swords of the day have the large eagle pommel but this pattern has the smooth brass backstrap that joining the blade tang and resembled a simple bird's head instead of the eagle design. The brass of the backstrap as well as the single branch hand guard still retain some of the original gold gilding. The original ivory grip of the sword has eight grooves with the original brass wire wrapping. On the sides of the hand guard it has the double langets with the deeply engraved leaf pattern. The massive blade is 33 inches in length with the deep curve. It has the original blue and gold detail work that goes 19 inches from the base. The blue and gold make the ornate floral and patriotic designs on each side. It has the beautiful Federal style eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto. This National motto is Latin and translates as "Of Many, One!". With the wideness of the blade combined with the massive curve it is amazing that the original leather and brass scabbard is still accompanying it. The leather is still solid and displays beautifully. The brass on the throat and middle mount still retains a fine amount of the original factory gold gilding. This is an amazing sword with a beautiful blade accompanied by the original scabbard. Don't miss this one!
