Rare Portsmouth Navy Yard Marked "USN" Naval Fuse Box
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a superbly marked original Civil War naval artillery fuse box. It has a tough to find variety of markings. This is the leather pouch that went on the side of the Civil War naval artilleryman. It held his paper time fuzes for firing the cannon shells. The outer flap has a clear stamp of "USN" with the oval around the letters to make them stand out more. The original closure tab is present on the bottom of the box as well as the brass finial. On the back of the box it has the original leather belt loop solidly intact. When you open up the outer flap you see the arsenal marking. It has "P.N.H." and "N.Y.". This stands for the Naval Yard at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We have had many of the boxes themselves over the years but this is the first one of these with the U.S.N. mark and the Portsmouth marking. The leather is still nice and pliable and it displays superbly. This will make a fine addition for a naval or artillery collector either one.
