Excavated Civil War 3 Inch Schenkl Shell with Combination Style Fuse
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nicely priced excavated Civil War case shot Schenkl shell. That means that it is the style with the case shot balls that would have spread out when the shell exploded acting as a shot gun style blast. The Schenkl pattern is one of the most distinctive patterns of cannon shells of the Civil War. They have the tapered back with the ribs as you can see in the pictures. The iron has been cleaned and coated and displays very well as you can see. At the top of the shell it still has the combination fuse. You can still see the tab on the top and few of the numbers around the base. The verbal history accompanying this piece is that it was found years ago in the Petersburg, Virginia area. This is an original 3 inch Schenkl shell!
