Here is an original Civil War tactics manual. This is volume 2 of the rifle and light infantry tactics manual that was written just before the war by a brevet Lieutenant Colonel W.J. Hardee. During this time he was in the U.S. Army but would later go along to be one of the most important generals in the Confederacy. This manual is printed in 1861 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the J.B. Lippencott company. This volume 2 has to do with the instruction of battalions. The book is in very nice used but not abused condition and still retains many if not all of the original pullout diagrams. These books were made at the perfect size to be placed in the pocket of the soldier that was using them. The outside cover measures 5 1/8 inches by 3 1/2 inches in overall size. There is a name written in fine old Brown ink on the inside cover. It states Wm. L. Cobb / 34th Regt. / Mass. I." in 2 places. The records show that WIlliam L. Cobb was a 22 year old mechanic that enlisted on July 18th 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry. He served until May 15th 1865 when he was discharged. He was promoted tot he rank of Captain by the End of the War. He was wounded on October 18th 1863 at the action at Ripon, Virginia. On October 13th 1864 he was captured and confined as a prisoner of war until he was paroled at February 26th 1865. The manual will be accompanied by a brief printout of Cobb's service as well as that of the 34th Massachusetts. The guys at CivilWarData.com even had a picture of Cobb in uniform. This is a wonderful piece of Civil War tactics history.
