Click on an image to enlarge
This is a good looking excavated Civil War cuff size uniform button for the state of Virginia. It has the well worn detail to the face of the button with a very faint trace amount of the gold gilding remaining on the face. The Virginia seal has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". The original back is present with the correct Civil War maker's mark of Scovill of Waterbury. The shank is pushed flat against the back. This is the style listed as figure VA13av in Albert's book and VA222As in Tice's book. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered from Sailor's Creek, Virginia which was the last battle before Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. This action took place on April 6th 1865 and General Lee surrendered on April 9th, three days later.
