This is a great looking original excavated Civil War belt buckle. This one is from the state of New York. It has the script style "NY" letters in the center of the face of the cast brass plate. It has the integral cast wreath design around the letters and the stippled background. On the reverse of the buckle it has had the original thin size belt hook snapped off long ago. This belt buckle has the face that is a variant of the style that is illustrated as figure #667 of the O'Donnell and Campbell buckle book on page #403. They list this style plate as being manufactured from 1861 until 1863. The verbal history that accompanied this buckle is that it was found years ago in North Georgia. This means that it would have been worn by one of the soldiers fighting to get General Sherman down to Atlanta. . This one is a keeper! '
