This is a great looking piece of history from the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic or G.A.R. was the organization made up of Union Survivors of the Civil War. They held reunion and erected monuments to the men that fought for the north during the Civil War. This medal was to commemorate the 1895 reunion of the G.A.R. that was held in Louisville, Kentucky. The top medallion has the Kentucky horse. The lower medallion has the Louisville, Kentucky reunion location and the notation that it was the 29th National Encampment. It also notes that it was designed for a delegate to the reunion and "PRESENTED BY THE CITIZENS COMMITTEE". The original pin is on the reverse of the top bar as well as the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania maker's marking. This is an excellent medal for any collection.
