This is one of my favorite reunion medals of all time. It is a fine original example of the reunion medal from the Civil War Union Veterans organization known as the Grand Army of the Republic or G.A.R. This one is from the reunion that was held in 1899 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has a fine look. It has the original top bar with the pin on the back. It has the 33rd National Encampment notation as well as the 1899 date. The red, white and blue ribbon is in fine shape. The bottom medallion is what separates this medal from the rest. The back of the medal proudly states that it was made using metal from Captured cannon. Can you imagine? When you hold this one it makes you wonder what history the cannon that was melted to make it held. It reads "MADE OF CANNON CAPTURED BY NEW YORK PENNA AND MASS REGIMENTS AT FORT FISHER". Fort Fisher is located in North Carolina and was the location of some fierce fighting. The front of the medal has the Philadelphia location. Nice original displaying Civil War Union veteran's medal.
