Here is an original edition of the 1861 U.S. Army Regulations tactics manual. On the title page it states that it was printed by the Philadelphia firm of Lippencott. This is the classic style of Army regulations that were used throughout the Civil War by union officers. It has 594 pages detailing everything from uniform regulations to instructions for the quartermaster's Department. It has many charts and graphs. The overall size of the book measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches in overall size. It has the original blue cover with the gold gilding on the spine. As you can see the book has some wear and all of the pages appear to be present and accounted for. What makes this one extra special is that inside the cover it reads in ink "Captain Walsh Co. E. with Compliments of Lieut. Fred. R. Mundy Quarter Master Holly Hill Va. Nov. 1861". Both of these men served in the 44th New York Infantry. The 44th New York was known as the "Ellsworth Avengers" after the Union martyr, Elmer Ellsworth. The records show that Captain Walsh enlisted in Albany, New York on August 8th 1861 as Captain and he served until September 4th 1862. Lieutenant Mundy served for 3 years in the 44th. Along the bottom edge of the book it reads "Co. E. 44th Regt.N.Y.S.V." in brown ink. A brief printout of their service as well as that of the regiment will accompany the book.
