Tennessee 1842 Slave Bill of Sale for "Negro Boy Slave Named Arthur"
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a superb original and scarce slave bill of sale from the State of Tennessee dated 1842. This one is dated in brown ink for being paid $375 for "... a Negro Boy Slave named Arthur about twelve years old. There is also a notation that he will defend the title of the slave, he states that he will ".... warrant him to be sound healthy & sensible and a slave for life...". Often when you see the estate totals the slaves were by far the greatest valued item in the listings. On the back of the paper it has the notations where it was filed in Montgomery County Tennessee. The paper measures approximately 6 inches by 7-1/2 inches in overall size, which is just the right size for framing. This is a fine piece of Civil War history from antebellum Tennessee!
