Scarce Confederate Civil War 6# Wood Fuse Pattern Cannonball
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice authentic dug 6# version of the Civil War cannonball. This 6#er ball would have been fired from the smoothbore 3.67 inch cannon. It is the pattern known to collectors as the wood fuse cannonball because of the fuse system that they used. They had a wooden holder at the top that held the paper time fuze. The paper time fuze burned down like a wick until it caused the explosion of the ball. They are much tougher to find than the standard 12# version of these wood fuse cannonballs. The last photo shows how these 6# versions look beside the standard 12# versions. These 6 pound projectiles were a mainstay of the Confederate artillery in the early days of the Civil War. They were later phased out because of the limited range of fire that the smoothbore cannon held against the more modern rifled cannon. It has been flushed out and disarmed for display and preservation purposes as have all of our artillery projectiles. This one is a nicely priced original 6# wood fuse cannonball that will be a solid addition to your collection.
