Horstmann of Philly Etched Blade Eagle Head Pommel Officer Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an attractive sword from a famous maker. It is an original officer's pattern sword known to collectors as the Eagle Head. The name is simple to figure out because of the eagle head style pommel cap at the top of the sword. This one has a full-length 28-1/4th inch blade with a fine amount of the ornate etching on each side. At the base of the blade it has the maker's mark from the desirable Philadelphia maker of W.H. Horstmann & Sons. It shows "W.H.H. & S." and on the other side it has the Philadelphia production location. The guard and pommel cap are made of brass and they have traces of the original silver wash down in the protected areas. On the handle it has the bone material that has a nice look. The sword is accompanied by an attractive scabbard with the rings still intact. It has the stud style mount intact as well as the original drag and throat. On the back of the scabbard it has the Horstmann maker marking stamped into the brass. This is an attractive officer's sword that displays beautifully!
